MMI Interview Preparation: What Top Candidates Do Differently

By Meridian Advisory Team·7 May 2026

Understanding the MMI Format

The Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) is now the most common interview format for UK medical schools. Unlike traditional panel interviews, the MMI consists of multiple short stations (typically 6-10), each lasting 5-8 minutes and testing different competencies.

Why Medical Schools Use MMIs

The MMI format was developed to address limitations of traditional interviews:

  • Reduced interviewer bias: Multiple assessors reduce the impact of individual prejudice
  • Broader assessment: Different stations test different qualities
  • Standardisation: All candidates face the same scenarios
  • Reliability: Research shows MMIs are better predictors of clinical performance

Common Station Types

Ethical Scenarios

You'll be presented with an ethical dilemma and asked to discuss it.

Role Play Stations

You'll interact with an actor playing a patient, relative, or colleague.

Data Interpretation

You'll be given data and asked to interpret it.

Motivation and Reflection

You'll be asked about your experiences, motivations, or specific scenarios.

What Top Candidates Do Differently

  1. They Structure Their Responses — A brief pause to structure a response is far better than a rambling answer.
  2. They Acknowledge Complexity — Candidates who acknowledge complexity consistently score higher.
  3. They Listen Carefully — In role play stations, the best candidates spend more time listening than talking.
  4. They Remain Calm Under Pressure — Strong candidates maintain composure.
  5. They Move On Effectively — Top performers have strategies for resetting between stations.

The Confidence Factor

Perhaps the most underestimated element of MMI success is confidence. Not arrogance, but the quiet confidence that comes from thorough preparation and genuine self-knowledge.
